What is Net metering

Net metering is a system that allows consumers who generate some or all of their own electricity, typically using renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines, to sell excess electricity back to the grid. It is often used in conjunction with a grid-tied solar panel system, in which the excess solar electricity is used to offset the electricity that the homeowner or business consumes from the grid.

Under net metering, the electric utility company credits the customer's bill for the excess electricity that is generated and fed back into the grid. This helps to offset the cost of the electricity that the customer consumes from the grid. Net metering can help to reduce the amount of electricity that a customer needs to purchase from the utility, which can result in lower energy costs for the customer.

Net metering is often regulated by state or local governments, and the specific rules and regulations vary by location. In some cases, net metering may be mandatory for utility companies to offer, while in other cases it may be optional. It is important to check with your local utility company or government agency to determine whether net metering is available in your area and what the specific rules and regulations are.
